Joseph Marioni

Born 1943 in Cincinnati, Ohio (USA), died 2024 in New York City, New York (USA).

Joseph Marioni is one of the most important representatives of the Radical Painting movement, whose paintings are among the centrepieces of the Paul Ege Art Collection. The movement, which emerged in the 1970s, explored the basic conditions of painting. At the centre of the quiet, meditative works is a self-referential questioning of their elementary components such as material, colour, support, format and tools.
Joseph Marioni's painting concentrates on the concretely vivid dimension of colour. He is not concerned with the physical act of painting or the phenomenon of monochrome, but rather with the perception of colour and the question of the perception and perceptibility of colour in the picture.
